The birth date I have for James (Jan. 26, 1846) is different than the cemetery's date of Dec. 22, 1845 so I don't know which birth date is correct. In the 1850 U. S. Census for Frankfort, James is listed as four years old.

By 1860 when the census was taken in Winterport, James, age 14, still lived at home with his family and had attended school within the past year.

When the Civil War got underway, two of his older brothers, Eliakim and Reuben, had already enlisted and been in battles but only Eliakim came home. Reuben had died from wounds he received in Louisiana. I don't know why James and John decided to enlist in 1864; maybe to get revenge for Reuben's death. I'm sure their parents were not happy with their decision.

Someone e-mailed me this Civil War information which included a physical description of James.

"Son of Sylvanus Byard and Belinda Colson"

After the Civil War's end, James came home and married Edna Fields in Winterport on 14 Feb 1866. I haven't found her parents yet. They were together (no children) until Edna filed for a divorce in 1881. In 1880, they had lived on Deer Isle where James was a blacksmith and his brother, Charles, was a stone cutter.

James didn't marry again until 14 Jul, 1896 when he married Mary Ann Grant, born in Aberdeen, Scotland. This was their second marriage; Mary's first husband was a Mr. Murray and sadly I haven't found any information about him. Mary Ann and James were both residents of Rockland, Waldo, Maine when they married on Swan's Island.

In the 1900 census James and Mary lived in Hampden, Penobscot, Maine. He was a stone cutter and Mary was a housewife. James' widowed mother, Belinda (Malinda) on the census) was living with them. Belinda died five years later and her body was sent back to Winterport where her husband, Sylvanus Byard, was buried.

On March 18, 1906, James and Mary arrived in Boston from a trip they'd made to Aberdeen, Scotland and their next destination was Milford, New Hampshire where they lived and where James was a granite superintendent.

Two years later, in 1908, Mary Ann died. She was also sent to Winterport to be buried in the Byard plot in Oak Hill Cemetery.

In 1910, James, retired, lived with his brother, Charles, in Chelmsford, Middlesex, Massachusetts and in 1920, he lived in Derry, Rockingham, N. H., married to Mary Marden (the widow of Oren Page) and they were also found in Derry in 1930, living in the home that James owned.

Mary Marden Byard died at their home in 1934 and was buried in the Chester Village Cemetery in Chester, N. H. next to her parents.

James, almost age 91, died two years later after three days in the Alex Eastman Hospital in Derry. His remains were sent back to Winterport where he lies near his family members in the Byard family plot.
