- John Byard was born in Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine on 24 Apr 1778 according to Sedgwick's vital records and was one of six sons and four daughters born to Robert Byard and his wife Abigail Glover Byard. John's parents moved permanently to Sedgwick from Salem, Massachusetts at the end of the 1760s and made their home on what's still called Byards Point. They are buried in Settlers Rest Cemetery in Sargentville.
John was married twice. His first wife, Eunice Hale, died in 1808, 16 days after their third child, Eunice, was born. John's next wife, Judith Eaton Dodge, was the widow of Hezekiah Dodge and Judith brought with her to the marriage her two daughters, Lydia and Joanna Dodge. Judith and Hezekiah's son, Moses Dodge, lived only two years.
John and Judith (Eaton) Byard (my ancestors) had four children that I've found, all born in Sedgwick Village. John was a farmer and at times he hired himself out to work for others using his oxen and cart and he also hired others to work for him. I've never found a death record for John but it seems he may have been ill a month or so before he died. After John's death, Judith never re-married and she lived for another nine years.
