  • Notes

    • Telephone Interview, Christine Silvestrini, December 29, 1995: "My
husband, Leo, and I met when I moved from Tennessee to Arcata, California, in 1930 and met his sisters. They introduced us and we were married in 1937. Leo and I worked on our Jersey dairy in Arcata until we moved to Durham in 1951. We bought 28 acres from Roy W. and Hazel Welborn, who had bought the land from Mr. Newman. When we moved here we were told that Mr. Newman had planted the entire ranch to peaches, and there were, near the house, two trees which still bore fruit when we first moved here."

"We trucked our cows up from Arcata and gradually added some Holsteins, milking at one time about 40 head. We sold our milk to Carnation Company in Chico, and retired from the dairy business in 1974. During the intervening years we added to our original acreage of 28 by buying a 13-acre portion from Mr. Gates, and another 27 acres from John Taresh on the south side of the Hubbs place [Allotment 99, Ed.], and did some beef cattle farming. We had a total of 68 acres, but sold all but five acres to Rodney Peterson in 1974, who has planted it to almonds. Of our remaining five-acre piece, we planted three acres to almonds as well, and have retained the barn, the original house, and a small apartment which we built for a milker quite a long time ago."

"The original house was, as we were told by Mrs. Hubbs, at least 60 years old when we moved into it in 1951. Mr. Newman had added a porch, which was enclosed by Mr. Welborn, who also added a concrete foundation and service porch. Much of the building material was redwood lumber and it is well built. We were told that the house was part of the Stanford Ranch headquarters..."
