1850 US Census for Sedgwick, Hancock County, Maine - August 13, 1850

George, age 15, lived with his parents and siblings. He and his brothers and sisters were all students except for Eva who was about three years old. George was also listed as a farmer, helping his father on their farm.

      An cestry.com

      1860 U. S. Federal Census for Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine - June 19, 1860

George, age 25, was living at home with his parents. The census taker wrote that George

was a farmer but I believe that George was not at home when the census taker arrived and I base my opinion on a bit of biography that follows:

History of Humboldt County, California : with biographical sketches of the leading men and women of the county who have been identified with its growth and development from the early days to the present Los Angeles, Calif.: Historic Record Co., 1915, 1297 pgs. Leigh H. Irvine, author

On page 678, Mr. Irvine wrote an article about George's son, Robert Edward Byard, but had this to say about George, himself:

".....George Augustus Byard is a native of Maine....When he was very young, he left home to follow the fortunes of the sea....following in the footsteps of his forebears, his father having been a sailor all of his life and the son of a sailor. He followed the sea for a period of nine years, from the time he was fourteen until he was twenty-three. In October of 1858, he left Boston on a sailing vessel bound for the California coast, rounding the Horn (Cape Horn off the southern tip of Chili in South America) and arriving in San Francisco in the spring of 1859."

"At this time, he gave up the life of a sailor and went to work in the woods of Marin County, later engaging in the wood business for himself. In 1865, he removed his family to Humboldt County and for the first two years worked for George A. Kellogg in the woods. In 1867, he purchased a farm at Fortuna, where he resided until his death on March 3, 1915, and was for many years engaged in dairying and diversified farming, owning one of the best farms in the valley. He had been interested in the political affairs of the country all his life, was a staunch Republican in his political affiliations and was progressive and well-informed on all questions of public interest, both local and national."

My notes: In the 1860s, in Marin County (north across the Golden Gate Bridge which didn't exist back then) there was ample opportunity to find employment in the lumber business. Stands of Redwood were everywhere and lumber was shipped over to San Francisco via schooners and barges, according to the Marin Journal, published on August 27, 1864.

Mr. Irvine also wrote that in 1862 in San Francisco, George married Agnes Ingram, born in Ireland, who lived with her family in the little town of Bolinas in Marin County where her father was a farmer.

I think George met Agnes when he sailed to Bolinas to pick up wood to transport back to San Francisco and then, eventually, settled there for awhile.

1870 U.S. Federal Census for Eel River Township, Humboldt County, California - 23 July, 1870

      (Post Office was at Rohnerville)

George, 35 years old, was head of the household and worked on his farm. He valued his real estate at $4,000 and his personal property at $1,800. In the home were his wife, two little sons and two little daughters, plus his younger brother, Henry Florentin Byard who apparently was living with him at that time.

My notes: In 1874, Eel River changed its name to Rohnerville in honor of the founder, Henry Rohner, the immigrant from Switzerland. Rohnerville is just over 2 miles southeast of Fortuna.

      1880 U. S. Federal Census for Rohnerville Twp., Humboldt, California - June 9, 1880

George, age 45, married and the head of the household was a farmer. Living with him were his wife and six children.
