  • Notes
    • Ancestry.coim - Maine Marriage Records, 1705-1922

When Frances' daughter married John Lane, Frances' name was shown as "Fanny M. Bayard."

Frances' own father's surname was spelled Bayard when a notice of his death was printed in the Lewiston Evening Journal, stating that he belonged to an old family, meaning the Bayards who arrived in this country in the mid-1600s. Also, Frances' youngest sister, Nellie, gave her son, Edson, the middle name of Bayard. I didn't know that Frances' nickname was Fanny but it appears that it was.

1850 US Census for Sedgwick, Hancock County, Maine - August 13, 1850

Frances, 17 years old, was living with her parents and attended school.

      1860 U. S. Federal Census for Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine - June 19, 1860

Frances was a married woman, keeping house for her husband and two little children. Someone wrote to me long ago and said Frances and Samuel had a little boy, named Frederick A. Herrick, born in 1854 but that he died the next year. I've lost that e-mail and can't verify the information.

      1870 U.S. Federal Census for Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine - July 2, 1870

Frances, age 37, was keeping house for her family. Her two children were still living at home.

1880 U.S. Federal Census for Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine

Frances, age 47, was keeping house. Her daughter, Fannie, was living at home and was employed as a school teacher. Frances' son, Fred, was away, attending Colby "University" as the census-taker wrote it.

Francis, age 67 and head of the household, stated that she could read and write, was now a widow and owned her own home. Fannie was living with her.

At the age of 77, ten years later, Francis was living in Sedgwick with her daughter, Fannie, and Fannie's husband, John Lane, who was called the head of the household. Frances had her own income and stated that she'd given birth to three children but only two were still alive.

Maine Death Records, 1617-1922 Record for Frances M Herrick

Frances, age 85 years and four months, died in Sedgwick where she'd been born and had lived all of those 85 years. Her occupation was shown as "Lady" which I assume means (in our modern-day language) "Lady of Leisure." Financially she was never forced to support herself after the death of her husband. The causes of death were "Age" and "La Grippe."

I was curious what "La Grippe" meant since I'd seen other deaths in Hancock County where this strange phrase was shown to be the cause of deaths. This is what I found:

      http://virus.stanford.edu/uda/

The Flu epidemic of 1918-1919 (known as "Spanish Flu" or "La Grippe") killed between 20 and 40 million people world-wide; a "global disaster." Poor Frances!

Frances' only son, Dr. Fred Herrick who lived in Brooklin, was the physician reporting her death. She was buried in Sedgwick Rural Cemetery on April 26, 1918.

I would think that Frances died in the home of her daughter and son-in-law. Dr. Fred may have been her attending doctor during her final days. The Undertaker, B. O. Dollard, also lived in Brooklin.

"The information which follows was copied in January 1948 from the original Sedgwick Rural Cemetery Sexton's List, by Helen B. Sargent, of Washington, D. C. for the National Society D. A. R. Library.

The list contains a record of burials in the Rural Cemetery, and is useful to researchers because it includes people for whom there are no headstones."

Frances "Harrick" is shown buried on 26 Apr 1918.
