  • Notes
    • J.C. Byard, age 93 of Levering, died November 18, 2017 at Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace.

J.C. was born in 1924 in Vestaburg, Michigan, the son of Ira and Kate (Goldner) Byard. At a young age he moved to Levering and attended Canby and Pellston Schools.

In 1950, he married Maxine Bennett, the daughter of Clinton and Ruth Bennett, they shared 67 years together.

J.C. proudly served the United States Army during World War II in occupational forces in Japan.

He was a farmer for years and then went to work for L.W. Edison Construction out of Grand Rapids, retiring in 1980 from the Operating Engineers Local 324. He then went to work for Boyne Highlands in Harbor Springs doing lawn mower maintenance and repairs, retiring a second time at age 80.

J.C. was hard working and always kept active tinkering with his tractors or doodle bug, working in his garden until age 89, or wiring, plumbing, or carpentry; he was a jack of all trades and would lend a hand to anyone who needed his expertise. His pride and joy was a 1929 Model A Ford he restored and drove in many parades.

Surviving are his five children, Jay Charles Byard, Ruth (Douglas) Hunt, Susan (Dennis) Godzik, Laura Byard and Rebecca (Patrick) Prater; eight grandchildren, Clinton, Mindy, Samuel (Tracy), Sara (Joe), Andrew, Lee (Megon), Aaron and Margaux; nine great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He also opened his heart and home to many foster children through the years. His family was the joy of his life.

J.C. was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Hugh (Tillie), Ivan (Olive), Clifford (Helen), Ray (Lucille), Bruce (Mildred), Clare (Katherine); and his sister, Rosemary (Ellis) Kilpatrick.

J.C. will be greatly missed by all. A man of few words, but known through his actions.

There will be a visitation at Nordman-Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan on Tuesday, November 21 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Bliss Missionary Church on Wednesday, November 22 at 11:00 a.m. with a one hour visitation prior to the service.

Anyone wishing to make a charitable donation in J.C.’s memory are asked to consider the Mackinac Straits Health System. [3]
