      MOTHER IS KILLED AT CROSSING
MOTHER-IN-LAW, DAUGHTER, 3, ARE HURT CRITICALLY

A young Adams township mother was killed and her three-year-old daughter and her mother-in-law were injured critically at 3:13 p.m. Friday when their auto was struck by a fast New York Central passenger train at a county road crossing hear their home, six miles northwest of Greensburg.

Killed instantly was Mrs. James (Betty Lou) Byard, 22, of R.R.1, St. Paul.

Injured critically were: The dead woman's three-year-old daughter, Lisa Lynn Byard, and Mrs. William (Lillian Edith) Byard, 48, of R.R.1, St. Paul.

Mrs. William Byard was transferred from Memorial hospital to the Indiana University Medical Center at the Robert Long hospital, Indianapolis, three hours after the accident. She is suffering from a possible broken left leg between the knee and hip; a broken right leg between the knee and ankle; and severe head lacerations. She was in surgery from 11 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. today.

The child is still in the local hospital with a severe concussion, a fractured left leg and multiple lacerations.

Both the child and Mrs. William Byard were still unconscious this morning.

Mrs. James Byard's body was lying at the rear of the mangled auto, which was carried 91 feet before coming to a halt on the southwest side of the tracks. Death was due to a skull fracture, according to Paul O. Joliff, Decatur county coroner.

Mrs. William Byard was thrown 27 feet southwest of the track and was lying against a farm fence on the Baily farm, some 45 feet south of the crossing. The child was thrown over the fence into a field on the Bailey farm.

      RETURNING HOME

The eastbound passenger train, traveling between 75 and 79 miles per hour, according to W.S. Hensley, of Indianapolis, the engineer, went 1,677 feet beyond the crossing on County Road 450N before coming to a halt.

Mrs. James Byard, the driver, lived approximately one mile southeast of the crossing. She had gone to tell her husband they were about out of fuel oil for their furnace. Her daughter and mother-in-law had gone along for the ride.

Mr. and Mrs. James Byard had moved to the Stanton Guthrie farm only last September from his father's farm, some 1-1/2 miles southwest of the crossing.

James Byard was picking corn in the field just northwest of the crossing and was leaving the west end of the field about the time of the crash, about which he knew nothing until notified by Roderick Bailey, who was plowing in a field on his father's farm. Bailey, who was only a few hundred feet southwest of the crossing, said he glanced around just after the impact and immediately went to get James Byard.

      DIESEL DAMAGED

The train engineer told state police he was within 300 to 500 feet of the crossing when he saw the car approaching from the west. He said he was blowing the train's whistle continually after he saw the vehicle and added that as far as he could determine the driver never did see the train, No. 302, comprised of two coaches, a Pullman and three mail cars towed by two diesel engines.

The right front of the lead diesel was extensively damaged. The steps on the front were bent down under the engine and had to be cut away with a torch before the train could continue to Greensburg, where the front diesel was taken off the train. Train No. 302 normally leaves Greensburg for Cincinnati at 3:20 p.m. It was 6:26 p.m. before it pulled out Friday evening.

The crossing where the crash occurred is marked by the customary crossarms. Some 200 feet north of the crossing there is an embankment on the west side of the tracks to prevent eastbound motorists from seeing approaching southbound rail traffic until it comes into view from behind the embankment.

State police were assisted by the sheriff's department.

This marked the eighth traffic fatality in Decatur county this year and one-half of them have come as the result of train-auto crashes at railroad crossings.
