    • Rex J. Byard
      Rex our beloved husband, father, brother and grandpa passed away on Flag Day June 14, 2004 in Provo, UT.

      Born August 12, 1921 in Santaquin, UT to Clarence and Ada Johnson Byard. Attended the Santaquin and Payson schools graduating from Payson High School. Married Fern Topham on November 24, 1941 in Pasadena, CA; later solemnized in the Jordan River Temple.

      Rex loved his country and served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II, serving in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres, with 9 escort missions across the Atlantic.

      Rex and Fern settled in Orem where he worked for Geneva Steel as a railroad engineer. There they raised two girls, Ann and Kay. Rex enjoyed bowling and the outdoors, fishing and hunting, especially hunting pheasants in Santaquin with family and friends. Rex enjoyed working with the ward young men as their sport coach for 13 years.

      He will be remembered for his love and devotion to his 8 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; from helping them fish to chasing them around the neighborhood park.

      Rex is survived by his beautiful bride Fern, daughters, Ann Young (John), Kay Gagon (LaMar), 8 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, sister Belva Salmon.

      Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 17, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at the Suncrest 4th Ward Chapel located at 190 North 800 West, Orem. Friends and family may call Wednesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street in Orem and also Thursday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the ward chapel. Interment will be in the Santaquin Cemetery.
